Second Missing Swimmer’s Body Found in Exmouth

A body discovered in the waters off Exmouth, Devon, is believed to be that of the second swimmer who went missing in Budleigh Salterton on Christmas Day. The man, identified as possibly 63-year-old Matthew Upham, was one of two swimmers who disappeared in turbulent waters on Christmas morning. The recovery operation involved a significant emergency response today, January 25, with police and coastguard personnel visible near Orcombe Point in Exmouth, as reported by DevonLive.

Witnesses observed a cordon at Sandy Bay from Orcombe Point, with reports of police cars and coastguard vehicles at the scene. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the recovery of the man’s body on the shoreline earlier in the day. A police spokesperson stated that emergency services were alerted to a possible body sighting near Exmouth Beach, leading to the recovery of the man’s body. While formal identification is pending, the family of a 64-year-old man from Budleigh Salterton has been notified of the discovery.

Earlier this week, authorities found the body of the first missing swimmer at Sandy Bay in Exmouth. The police and coastguard responded to the incident on Tuesday morning. Although formal identification is yet to be finalized, investigators believe the body belongs to the 47-year-old man who failed to return ashore in Budleigh Salterton. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, but their next of kin has been informed.
