Carley Fortune, a renowned romance writer, has revealed that her upcoming novel, “Only in Summer,” is set to launch on May 18, 2027. This new book will transport readers back to the familiar town of Barry’s Bay, Ont., which was also the backdrop for her previous works, “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer.”
In a recent newsletter announcement, Fortune shared her personal connection to the setting, stating that she purchased a cottage near Barry’s Bay before embarking on writing this novel. Growing up in this town, she had always dreamed of owning a cottage by a lake.
The protagonist of “Only in Summer,” Eleanor Florek, known as Ellie, shares a similar aspiration. Ellie, the cousin of Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s earlier Barry’s Bay tales, has longed to acquire property in the town where she spent her childhood. However, her plans are disrupted when she discovers that a neighboring house is being demolished to make way for a grand mansion by its new owner.
While specific details about the plot remain undisclosed, it is hinted that a hesitant romance will develop in this picturesque lakeside environment. Fortune, a writer and journalist based in Toronto, has previously edited for Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, and Toronto Life. Her past publications include “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.”
“Meet Me at the Lake” was a finalist on Canada Reads in 2024, championed by fashion content creator and model Mirian Njoh, marking the first romance novel to feature on the show. Additionally, “Every Summer After” was transformed into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After,” with a second season confirmed, while Netflix Canada is set to adapt “This Summer Will Be Different” into a 10-episode show.
