A fresh investigation has been launched by regulators regarding Royal Mail’s failure to meet letter delivery targets for another year.
In a recent admission, the privatised postal company acknowledged that only 75.7% of first-class mail and 90.2% of second-class mail were delivered within the specified timeframes, significantly below their target rates. This resulted in numerous items, ranging from greeting cards to important appointments, being delayed, causing dissatisfaction among households and businesses, especially given the recent increase in stamp prices.
Ofcom, the regulatory body, deemed this performance “unacceptable” and has initiated an inquiry into the matter, potentially leading to substantial fines for Royal Mail, which has already incurred penalties exceeding £37 million in previous years.
To address the situation, Ofcom is pressuring Royal Mail to accelerate its modernization efforts and commence the implementation of an improvement plan without delay. As part of this, Royal Mail has been granted permission to deliver second-class letters on alternate weekdays, and future delivery targets have been adjusted accordingly.
Despite acknowledging some progress by Royal Mail, Ofcom expressed disappointment in the delayed implementation of delivery reforms and the continued subpar service levels. Ian Strawhorne, Ofcom’s enforcement director, emphasized the importance of a reliable postal service to the public and reiterated the commitment to holding Royal Mail accountable for its past performance shortcomings.
