“Red Arrows Unveil New 7-Aircraft Formation”

The Red Arrows have debuted a groundbreaking new formation, showcasing seven aircraft instead of their traditional nine at the English Riviera Airshow in Torquay, Devon. This change comes as the world-famous squadron aims to reduce the strain on their aging fleet of BAE Systems Hawk T1s, rotating the use of engines to prolong their lifespan.

Since their expansion in 1966, the Red Arrows have been known for their iconic ‘Diamond Nine’ formation with nine aircraft. However, they will now predominantly fly with seven aircraft in most displays to ensure the longevity of their Hawk T1 fleet. Exceptions will be made for special occasions such as The King’s Birthday Flypast and the 4th of July 250-year anniversary celebrations in the US.

The UK government has extended the operational life of the Red Arrows’ Hawk T1 aircraft to 2030, recognizing the challenges posed by maintenance requirements and the dwindling availability of spare parts. Despite these obstacles, the Red Arrows remain a source of national pride, renowned for their precision, speed, and teamwork.

Looking ahead, the Red Arrows plan to transition to a new aircraft type, necessitating sustainable management of their current fleet. While the team historically flew with seven aircraft in the 1960s and in select display seasons, they will continue to captivate audiences across the UK, mainland Europe, and beyond with their performances from May to October this year.

In a recent setback, Aeralis Ltd, a potential manufacturer for the Red Arrows’ next-generation aircraft, faced financial difficulties and went into administration due to delays in the UK Defence Investment Plan and geopolitical funding challenges.
