Fernando Alonso is reportedly considering a comeback to Alpine, his former team, amid ongoing struggles for performance at Aston Martin. While Alonso initially expressed his intention to end his Formula 1 career with his current team, speculations are circulating at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix about a potential switch.
Alonso, who turns 45 in July, has had three previous stints with the Enstone-based outfit, with his most successful period resulting in consecutive drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 while the team was known as Renault. Recent spells between 2008-2009 and 2021-2022 were less fruitful.
Rumors suggest that Alonso might reunite with boss Flavio Briatore at Alpine, given their strong bond and Briatore’s interest in bringing Alonso back. However, such a move would involve ending Alonso’s existing agreement with Aston Martin, which secures him an ambassadorial role post-retirement, keeping him connected to F1 in the years ahead.
Alpine has shown improvement this season after finishing last in the constructors’ championship in 2025. With Briatore back at the helm and Mercedes engines powering the team, Alpine currently holds the fifth position as the leading midfield team in 2026.
Alonso’s spirits are high at his home race in Barcelona, where he last tasted victory in 2013. However, with the circuit likely not on the 2027 race calendar, Alonso hinted that this race could be his final F1 appearance at Montmelo. He mentioned that a decision on his future in the sport will be made after the summer break.
