A shocking video captured the moment a reckless driver struck his close friend while driving at high speed in what seemed like a reckless act. Mehmet Celik, aged 24, collided with Thomas Rees while driving his vehicle in Swansea, south Wales, resulting in severe injuries to Rees, including a brain injury.
The incident occurred when Mr. Rees, 23, contacted Celik for a ride home after a night out. Prosecutors revealed that Celik rushed past their meeting spot and then attempted a risky turn at a wide junction just as Rees was crossing the road to enter the car.
The impact of the collision was so intense that Rees lost his shoes in the crash. Despite Celik’s panic-stricken reaction at the scene, Rees had to be airlifted to the hospital with injuries including brain bleeding, lung blood clot, broken breastbone, and fractured calf bone, leading to an extended hospital stay.
A subsequent police report found that Celik was driving at 36mph on the wrong side of the road, well above the 20mph speed limit. As a result of the crash, Celik’s car sustained significant damage, including a smashed front windscreen and heavily dented bonnet.
Celik pleaded guilty to causing serious injury due to dangerous driving. Reports indicated that Rees’ recovery has been challenging, significantly impacting his life. In court, Celik’s defense lawyer acknowledged the grave consequences of his actions, attributing the incident to a misguided attempt to display bravado that went terribly wrong.
The judge handed Celik an 18-month suspended sentence for dangerous driving, along with a four-month nightly curfew, 300 hours of unpaid work, and a two-year driving ban. The court emphasized the severity of the incident, cautioning against reckless driving behaviors that endanger lives on the road.
