A mother in Australia has given birth to an extraordinary set of identical quadruplets, a rare occurrence. Jenitar and her husband, Jortham Na-amoana, welcomed four baby girls named Emily, Harriet, Alexa, and Catherine at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
The quadruplets were conceived naturally and are monozygotic, meaning they originated from a single fertilized egg that split into four embryos. The babies were delivered via caesarean section at 28 weeks and four days on July 14th, defying the odds of a one in 15 million chance of naturally conceiving quadruplets.
The couple, who already had four children ranging from 10 to one year old, were taken by surprise at the news of expecting quadruplets. Dr. Alexa Bendall, a maternal fetal medicine specialist and obstetrician, who cared for Mrs. Na-amoana during her pregnancy, expressed admiration for Jenitar’s resilience and the rarity of monozygotic quadruplets sharing the same placenta.
The quadruplets are currently in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit to ensure their healthy development until they reach full term.
