Qamdo Bamda Airport in Tibet, China, is home to the world’s longest runway but is also known as one of the most inconvenient airports globally due to its remote location. Despite its impressive three-mile runway, travelers often find it challenging to reach their final destination as the airport is situated 84 miles away from the nearest town.
Positioned beyond the small village of Bamda at an elevation of 4,300 meters above sea level, Qamdo Bamda Airport’s isolated location is attributed to Tibet’s rugged terrain, which makes it impossible to build an airport closer to the town of Qamdo. Travelers heading to Qamdo must endure a 78-mile journey by car, taking approximately two-and-a-half hours to reach the city from the airport.
Although the airport’s vast runway provides a unique sight, operating at such high altitudes poses challenges for aircraft due to thinner air, reduced engine thrust, and limited lift from the wings. The airport’s extreme operating conditions, including unpredictable weather and mountainous surroundings, necessitate the unusually long runway.
Originally established in 1995 as the world’s highest airport at 4,334 meters above sea level, Qamdo Bamda Airport was later surpassed by Daocheng Yading Airport in 2013. The airport underwent significant renovations in 2007, including the construction of a new terminal and a complete overhaul of the runway, costing approximately £29 million.
While the airport only offers domestic flights to destinations like Chengdu, Lhasa, and Chongqing, it remains a notable entry in the Guinness World Records for its extended runway. Despite its isolated location, an hourly shuttle bus service connects the airport to Qamdo Town, providing travelers with a means to reach their intended destinations efficiently.
