Prince William commemorated the third anniversary of his ambitious homelessness initiative by unveiling over £7million in fresh funding. The project, named Homewards, has already invested £1.9m in six UK locations over the past year, with an additional £3.5m secured through grants and private donations.
The latest funding injection of £7.7m includes a notable partnership worth £2.3m with The Multibank, DfS, Bosch Home Appliances, IKEA, and B&Q. This collaboration aims to assist individuals in establishing and maintaining tenancies to prevent homelessness.
In a bid to expand the project’s impact, Prince William highlighted the importance of demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions in multiple locations across the country. Lloyds bank’s previous donation of £50m has unlocked new lending opportunities to support housing initiatives.
With a focus on scaling successful solutions, Homewards aims to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring. The project has already reached over 2,400 individuals through various community programs, facilitated over 250 job placements, and helped 73 families secure stable housing.
The Prince emphasized the systemic nature of homelessness and the role of collaborative systems in preventing it. By fostering a culture of shared responsibility and early intervention, Homewards seeks to embed prevention strategies throughout society.
Celebrity endorsers such as Fara Williams, Gail Porter, Tyrone Mings, Geri Horner, Sir Bryn Terfel, and Sara Cox have lent their support to the cause. Prince William’s personal connection to the issue stems from childhood experiences with his late mother, Princess Diana, which ignited his passion for addressing homelessness.
The Homewards initiative targets long-term change by testing and implementing practical solutions to prevent homelessness on a larger scale. With growing evidence of successful interventions, the project aims to continue its progress and expand its impact in the coming years.
