Diners at a restaurant in Birmingham faced a terrifying incident when an assailant armed with a baseball bat and knife targeted a pregnant woman, leaving her with a serious injury. The dramatic event unfolded at Al-Qamar restaurant on Vincent Street in Balsall Heath.
The pregnant woman sought refuge in the restaurant as she was being pursued by her attacker, coinciding with Akilah Bennett and her family preparing to leave the establishment. Bennett described the harrowing moment when the injured woman ran into their midst, seeking help.
Shortly after, a man brandishing a baseball bat appeared outside the restaurant. Initially, Bennett assumed there was a connection between the attacker and the woman, but it became evident that was not the case.
Bennett recounted the chaos as the attacker menaced patrons with the bat, with her uncle bravely stepping in to shield the woman. The restaurant owner recognized the assailant as possibly a local resident.
The situation escalated when the attacker returned wielding a knife after being initially driven away. Bennett and her cousin swiftly ushered everyone inside, securing the premises to ensure safety for all present.
Although the attacker was eventually dissuaded from further violence and departed, the tense ordeal felt prolonged until the arrival of the police and ambulance services.
Reflecting on the incident, Bennett lamented the disruption to an otherwise enjoyable dining experience and commended the restaurant staff for their handling of the situation. West Midlands Police confirmed the incident occurred just before 10 pm on July 14 on Vincent Street, prompting an investigation into the assault and threats made with the knife.
Authorities urged anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward to assist in the ongoing inquiry, referencing log 6300 of July 14 for reporting purposes.
