Police in Northern Ireland have apprehended a 27-year-old individual on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident where an officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle. The event occurred in the Model Farm estate in Downpatrick around 4:45 am on Sunday. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that the officer sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Law enforcement officers initially tried to halt a vehicle in the Fountain Street area. Subsequently, the vehicle was discovered in Ballymote Walk, where officers observed a man fleeing from it and pursued him towards Colmcille Road, as reported by Belfast Live.
According to the police, upon returning to their vehicle, they found a person in the driver’s seat driving recklessly. Allegedly, the vehicle was driven directly at an officer, who discharged a shot before being hit.
The stolen police vehicle was abandoned shortly after, and the suspect fled the scene. The 27-year-old suspect was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody.
Immediate medical aid was administered at the scene by police colleagues, assisted by local community members. The injured officer was taken to the hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, as per the police.
The police vehicle, officer’s weapon, and ammunition have all been retrieved and taken for forensic analysis.
Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones remarked, “As is standard protocol when a police firearm is utilized, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been notified, and their investigation is ongoing.”
Jones continued, “Officers put themselves at risk to ensure public safety – they should not face assault while simply performing their duties, and this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers they encounter.”
“Our thoughts are with the officer receiving medical care in the hospital today for his injuries. We will continue offering support to him and his family.”
“This must have been a terrifying event for the officer and his colleagues, with the potential for life-altering or fatal injuries. Actions were taken in defense of life to safeguard himself and fellow officers.”
“Detectives from our Serious Crime unit have initiated an attempted murder inquiry, with investigations ongoing.”
Individuals with information or any footage related to the incident are urged to contact the police at 101, quoting reference number 317 31/05/26. Reports can also be submitted online via the PSNI website or anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or online at their website.
