Published in the journal Circulation, the AHA statement advocates for a holistic treatment strategy that prioritizes physical activity. It highlights that consistent physical activity can enhance various health indicators in overweight individuals, regardless of weight loss outcomes.

Professor Damon Swift, leading the AHA writing group, emphasizes the dual role of physical activity in weight management and long-term health. While weight loss is beneficial, sustaining physical activity is essential for long-term health benefits, even when weight remains stable.

Swift points out that incorporating exercise into a weight loss plan helps retain muscle mass, particularly when combined with resistance training. He underscores the importance of maintaining muscle for mobility, metabolism, and blood sugar regulation, stating that exercise alone may not lead to significant weight loss unless performed consistently for extended periods.

The AHA statistics reveal that only a small percentage of individuals achieve substantial weight loss through exercise alone, with most not meeting recommended physical activity levels. The association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity weekly for adults to support overall health.
