Dogs owned by William Johns in Swansea, south Wales, were found to be severely overweight by RSPCA inspectors. The terriers, named Cai and Lily, were reported as the most obese dogs ever seen by the RSPCA. This led to Johns being banned from keeping animals for 15 years and receiving a suspended prison sentence due to violations under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
RSPCA Inspector Gemma Cooper expressed concern over the condition of the dogs, stating that the neglect by the owner resulted in the dogs’ excessive weight gain. Unfortunately, Cai had to be euthanized due to heart failure, while Lily, also suffering from obesity, was taken into the care of the RSPCA for treatment.
During a visit to Johns’ residence, RSPCA officers discovered the dire state of the dogs, with Cai in critical condition and requiring immediate veterinary attention. Despite recommendations for Lily to undergo weight management, Johns initially refused to cooperate, leading to further intervention by RSPCA and South Wales Police.
After being seized, Lily was found to be shockingly overweight, making it challenging for inspectors to handle her. Vets confirmed the severe health issues faced by both dogs, emphasizing the prolonged suffering they endured due to obesity.
Following intervention, Lily underwent a weight loss program under RSPCA care, showing positive progress. Johns, citing health issues as a hindrance to proper care for the dogs, agreed to surrender Lily to the RSPCA. In addition to the ban on keeping animals, Johns was ordered to pay court costs and a victim surcharge.
Through dedicated care and attention, Lily has made significant improvements and will soon be rehomed by the RSPCA, providing hope for a brighter future for the once severely obese dog.
