“Nurse’s Generosity Lives On: Organs Save Four Lives”

A devoted nurse who spent her life aiding others posthumously saved four lives through organ donation. Pauline Thornton, 62, served at Hull University Teaching Hospitals for 42 years. Upon her passing from a brain haemorrhage in February, she generously donated her heart, kidneys, and liver. To support the NHS Blood and Transplant Charity and Hull Help for Refugees, staff members plan to climb Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough.

Pauline’s daughter, Claire Thornton, a nurse in Hull, emphasized her mother’s lifelong altruism, stating that even in death, Pauline continued to assist others. Commencing her nursing journey in Hull in 1984 as a scrub nurse in Hull Royal Infirmary’s theatres, Pauline advanced to become the charge nurse in the Centenary building at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham.

Despite opting for flexible retirement in 2019, Pauline opted to continue working as a scrub nurse in pediatric theatres at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital. Additionally, she dedicated her time to volunteering at Hull Help for Refugees, known for her kindness and generosity, especially for sharing produce from her allotment with colleagues.

According to Claire, sharing her mother’s narrative aims to raise awareness about the life-saving impact of organ donation. The family expressed gratitude for the support received and donations made towards the cause, reflecting on Pauline’s legacy of kindness and generosity. Janine Tate, a specialist nurse in organ donation at Hull United Teaching Hospitals, praised Pauline’s family for their decision to donate, acknowledging Pauline’s longstanding commitment to helping others.

The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life initiative led to the implementation of opt-out legislation for organ donation in 2020. Inspired by Spain’s successful transplantation model, new techniques could establish a national network focused on organ “reconditioning,” potentially enabling hundreds of additional life-saving transplants annually.

The campaign introduced an opt-out system for organ donation in England in May 2020, presuming individuals as donors unless they choose to opt out. The law mandates seeking consent from loved ones before donation. For further information, visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk.
