A nurse at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Emmanuel Ndubuisi, displayed heroism when he intervened to save a patient who accidentally set her head on fire while attempting to vape in her hospital bed. The incident occurred last August when the patient, a woman in her 50s, ignited a fire on herself while using an e-cigarette connected to an oxygen supply. Emmanuel acted swiftly by cutting off the oxygen and extinguishing the flames with a fire extinguisher, preventing a potentially catastrophic situation.
The patient sustained burns on her head but avoided serious injuries due to Emmanuel’s quick actions. Photos from the scene depicted the intensity of the fire, which had melted the oxygen mask and tube, as well as scorched the room’s floor. Emmanuel’s bravery earned him a national award for his courage and rapid response in ensuring the safety of the ward.
In his account of the event, Emmanuel described feeling terrified but focused on the task at hand, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in handling the crisis. He expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that it motivates him to continue providing the best care for patients and colleagues every day. The Cavell Star Award was presented to Emmanuel for his composure under pressure and his role in safeguarding both the patient and staff during the emergency.
Karen Sheard, the hospital’s director, lauded Emmanuel as an exemplary healthcare professional, embodying the values of compassion, respect, teamwork, and honesty. She highlighted the significance of witnessing these values in action and praised Emmanuel for upholding the standards of the profession. The incident prompted the hospital to issue a warning regarding the risks of smoking and vaping on the premises.
Jim Charlton, the hospital’s fire safety manager, emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe environment within healthcare facilities and commended the swift response of the staff in handling the situation. The hospital reiterated the prohibition of smoking and vaping indoors to prevent similar accidents in the future, citing this incident as a stark reminder of the hazards posed by such activities. The Cavell Star Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional care and dedication within the NHS, reflecting the commitment to patient and staff well-being.
