Members of the Mitres Bowls Club in Norwich are facing eviction from their 125-year-old clubhouse and bowling green to make room for a new outdoor café area. The Church of England, which owns the property, plans to repurpose the space into a community area linked to a nearby café.
The decision to relocate the club has left its 70 members devastated, with Vice-president Neville Warnes expressing deep disappointment. He emphasized the sentimental value of the club, where generations of members have created cherished memories and even scattered ashes. Moving to a new location would not replicate the unique atmosphere and history of their current home.
The move has sparked outrage among club members, including Julie Rust, the club’s first female member, and Treasurer Annette Warnes, who criticized the church’s handling of the eviction. Additionally, new member David Hart lamented the missed opportunity for the bowls and wider community.
The Bishop of Norwich is expected to respond to the club members’ plea to save their beloved establishment. Meanwhile, the church’s commercial subsidiary, STN Trading Ltd, stated that the redevelopment aims to create a shared community space for various activities, with profits reinvested in local social projects. The club members will receive support during their final season at the current location.
