“Norman Wells Adapts After Imperial Oil Closure”

The town of Norman Wells, N.W.T., is undergoing significant changes following the closure of Imperial Oil’s operations last week. Mayor Frank Pope described the event as momentous for the community of approximately 700 residents, prompting them to consider the future ahead.

Imperial Oil had been active in Norman Wells for over a hundred years before announcing its closure earlier this year due to declining production levels. As a result of the shutdown, the town has had to adapt its operations, including transitioning from gas-generated power provided by Imperial Oil to diesel power from the Northwest Territories Power Corporation.

Mayor Pope expressed concerns about the reliability of the new diesel power system and the limited availability of trained personnel to address any potential issues. In the event of a major outage, specialized crews would need to be flown in, highlighting the need for permanent staff in the community.

The departure of Imperial Oil has necessitated a reassessment of Norman Wells’ budget, as the company’s taxation revenue accounted for 70% of the town’s financial resources. Mayor Pope mentioned negotiations with the company to determine new taxation rates for the upcoming 20-year remediation project.

In addition to financial considerations, Mayor Pope emphasized the importance of preserving jobs within the community. He expressed hope that local residents would have opportunities to participate in the remediation efforts, a sentiment echoed by energy analyst Doug Matthews. Matthews emphasized the value of employing local skilled workers for the restoration project, citing ongoing discussions on training initiatives to ensure community members benefit from the closure process.

Matthews stressed the significance of involving local expertise in the remediation process and commended a local company for collaborating with Imperial Oil on interim restoration efforts. He underscored the potential for communities to revitalize themselves through innovative approaches, shifting from oil production to environmental cleanup and fostering a new perspective on sustainability.
