Earlier this week, authorities revealed that the remains of Lawrence Bertrim, a third individual, were discovered on a rural property located north of the usually serene town of Smiths Falls in eastern Ontario.
Mayor Shawn Pankow mentioned that the recent revelation brought about mixed emotions. While there is always hope for the safe return of missing individuals like Bertrim, who disappeared nearly four years ago, the discovery of remains offers a chance to provide the necessary dignity and some closure.
The latest somber discovery occurred on a densely forested 16-hectare property off Kelly Jordan Road in Montague, a township near Smiths Falls, approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Ottawa.
Just two weeks earlier, the remains of Robert Lambert, missing for an even longer period, were recovered. Prior to that, the remains of Robbie Thomson, who went missing three years ago, were also found. While three individuals have been charged in connection with Thomson’s death, another person faces charges as an accessory to the crime.
Notably, no suspects have been charged in the suspicious deaths of Bertrim and Lambert, with rewards of $50,000 being offered for valuable information. Although the remains of all three men were found at the same location, authorities have not explicitly linked their deaths.
Law enforcement officials are urging the public to allow them the necessary time and space to conduct a thorough investigation to bring closure to the families of Bertrim and Lambert.
Sgt. Erin Cranton, a spokesperson for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), emphasized the importance of respecting the grieving families and allowing the authorities to carry out their duties diligently.
The town of Smiths Falls, with around 9,000 residents, is more accustomed to news related to its economic activities, such as the Hershey’s chocolate factory and recent developments in the cannabis industry. The unsettling events unfolding on Kelly Jordan Road have left the community in a state of unease.
Mayor Pankow expressed that the situation is unprecedented for the town, considering that Bertrim was last seen in the downtown area, including near the mayor’s office.
As the community awaits answers, authorities are actively investigating the connections between the deaths and are committed to a comprehensive inquiry to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragedies.
