“Network Rail Implements Recovery Plan for Bedford Train Crash”

An update from Network Rail has been released regarding the recent train crash near Bedford, resulting in the death of one train driver and injuries to 100 passengers.

To aid in the recovery operation, a temporary road has been constructed adjacent to the train track collision site for cranes to access. Two 110-tonne rail-mounted Kirow cranes will lift the carriages, which will then be transferred by a road-mounted crane onto a specialized trailer capable of carrying heavy equipment.

Network Rail has confirmed that the carriages will be transported away from the site via road. Following this, engineers will evaluate the track, conduct necessary repairs, reinstate overhead lines, and perform final safety assessments before reopening the railway.

In a statement, Network Rail mentioned that a complex recovery process has commenced to remove the damaged trains and carriages, assess any track damage, and perform essential repairs. Additionally, the Overhead Line Equipment, responsible for powering electric trains, will be dismantled to facilitate the operation of a crane on a temporary access road.

The train driver who tragically passed away in the crash has been identified as Shaun Burton, a 60-year-old who joined East Midlands Railway in 2019. Described as a dedicated professional, Shaun’s service and commitment were highly regarded by colleagues and passengers.

During the incident, 100 passengers sustained various injuries, with nine of them in critical condition. The collision occurred on Friday afternoon near Bedford when the 4.40pm EMR service from Corby to London St Pancras collided with the 3.50pm service from Nottingham to London St Pancras.

Network Rail has advised travelers passing through Bedford that disruptions are expected until June 28. Consequently, there will be no Greater Thameslink Railway services north of Luton and no EMR services south of Bedford.
