Mother sentenced to life for killing infant daughter

A woman has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 12 years for the killing of her seven-week-old daughter. Sarah Ngaba, 32, caused severe head injuries to her infant, Eliza Ngaba, leading to her death. Ngaba had previously denied murder, claiming infanticide, but was found guilty by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court in May.

During the sentencing, Judge Mrs Justice Brunner KC described Ngaba’s actions as the result of escalating hostility towards the child. Ngaba, formerly residing in Briarwood, Telford, Shropshire, had previously been convicted of causing serious harm to Eliza, leaving her disabled.

Eliza eventually passed away at the age of two from a respiratory infection in August 2022, a consequence of the earlier assault. The judge commended Eliza’s foster parents, Laura and Gary Haynes, for their dedication and love towards the child.

The judge condemned Ngaba for delaying medical assistance to Eliza and failing to prioritize her daughter’s well-being. Ngaba was criticized for her callous behavior and for concealing the extent of Eliza’s injuries.

With Ngaba having already served a portion of her previous sentence, her minimum term for Eliza’s murder was reduced. Ngaba’s defense lawyer mentioned her positive behavior in prison, but the prosecution highlighted the violent nature of the assault on Eliza, describing it as a prolonged and aggressive attack on a helpless child.

Ngaba’s growing hostility towards Eliza before the attack was noted, emphasizing the brutality and lack of care exhibited during the incident. The prosecutor argued that Eliza died due to a violent assault by her mother during a fit of rage, characterizing it as a sustained and aggressive attack on the defenseless infant.
