A fortunate individual who won a £6.1 million lottery prize is now dedicating time to assisting at a local food bank. Kevin Jones, a bus driver, and his wife Michele matched the winning numbers in 2016, leading to a sudden transformation in their lives. Ten years later, Michele highlighted that one of the most gratifying aspects of their newfound financial security is being able to help those in need at a nearby food bank.
Michele began volunteering at The Pantry @ Sandbach Hub four years ago, where she aids individuals facing challenges with food costs and daily living expenses. Expressing her desire to assist others, Michele shared that she seized the opportunity to join the volunteer team as soon as her husband informed her about the open positions.
The pantry not only offers affordable food options and assistance to residents but also connects them with organizations that provide guidance and practical support. Michele emphasized that being part of this team has become an immensely fulfilling part of her life, underscoring the satisfaction of ensuring people do not go hungry.
Apart from Michele’s involvement at the pantry, the couple has collaborated with the National Lottery on various community initiatives, including contributing to an arts group in Manchester. Kevin recalled the moment he discovered his lottery win while working his bus route, noting that despite the life-changing news, he completed his shift the following morning to avoid inconveniencing passengers commuting to work.
Following their win, the couple prioritized assisting their family members and securing their futures. They relocated to Sandbach from Crewe to be closer to relatives and have enjoyed leisure trips to the Canary Islands over time. Kevin emphasized that the freedom brought by the win allowed them to support their family and eliminate financial burdens, granting them the liberty to travel and spend as they wished.
Their journey coincides with significant changes in the Lotto game, as operator Allwyn is implementing revisions expected to significantly increase the number of millionaires produced annually. These changes, which include offering players two chances to win with every £2 Lotto line, aim to raise the yearly millionaire count from approximately 140 to around 345, while also channeling more funds to charitable causes across the UK.
