“Mother fights bullying and seeks treatment for son’s alopecia”

A mother recently shared her experience of discovering her son’s alopecia after initially mistaking it for self-inflicted shaving with her razor. Kerry Osborne noticed a bald patch on her son Leo Osborne’s head in December 2023, leading her to believe he had attempted to shave his own head using a razor from the bathroom. However, as more patches appeared, Kerry grew concerned and took Leo to the GP for evaluation.

Leo underwent several tests, including blood and thyroid tests, which came back clear. He was then referred to a dermatologist at Colchester General Hospital, Essex, where he was diagnosed with alopecia areata. Over time, Leo lost all the hair on his head, arms, legs, eyebrows, and parts of his eyelashes, resulting in a diagnosis of alopecia universalis due to the extensive hair loss. Kerry shared that Leo faced bullying from peers, with hurtful comments made about his appearance.

Following a declined referral for specialist treatment under the NHS, Kerry set up a GoFundMe page to seek financial support for Leo’s private treatment. She expressed the need for more awareness and education about alopecia to combat bullying. Kerry recounted the emotional journey of seeing her son lose his hair gradually, facing challenges at school and in social settings due to his changed appearance.

Despite unsuccessful steroid treatment, Leo has continued regular hospital check-ups. The family remains hopeful for acceptance for free treatment through a second NHS referral request. They have also secured a private appointment at Mayfair Children’s Clinic in London through fundraising efforts to explore potential treatment options.

Kerry emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing the root cause of Leo’s alopecia, seeking personalized treatment to support him as he transitions to secondary school. The healthcare providers involved expressed ongoing support for Leo’s care and treatment, ensuring close communication with the family to explore available options.
