Britons are being cautioned about severe thunderstorms as the Met Office urges individuals to assemble an “emergency flood kit.”
After experiencing the warmest spring on record in England and Wales, certain regions are now facing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and lightning strikes due to the arrival of stormy weather conditions.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in parts of Scotland from 3pm to 10pm today. Residents in the nine areas covered by the warning are advised to prepare an emergency kit in case of flash flooding.
The weather agency recommends considering the risk of flash flooding in your area and preparing a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. Being equipped with essentials like torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessary items can help individuals better manage power outages.
England and Wales enjoyed their warmest spring this year, partly attributed to the early heatwave that struck the UK in late May. However, the weather has taken a turn with low-pressure systems bringing in heavy rains, with parts of southeast England receiving more rain in 24 hours than in the entire months of April and May.
For those within the storm warning area, the Met Office advises checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train schedules, and adjusting travel plans accordingly to avoid delays. In case of thunder, seek shelter in a safe enclosed space like a car, avoiding trees or structures that may attract lightning strikes. Stay informed about changing weather warnings to stay safe.
Travelers are cautioned to be careful around standing water and hail, which could lead to delays, and there is a risk of lightning damage to buildings.
According to the Met Office, expect some damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes, potential travel disruptions due to spray, standing water, or hail, and possible short-term power and service outages. Some homes and businesses may experience flooding, leading to property damage.
The forecast for tonight includes showers easing in the evening, with some continuing overnight particularly in the north and west. Clear spells will develop briefly before rain returns to western areas by dawn, accompanied by increasing winds.
Wednesday’s forecast indicates a band of rain moving eastwards, lingering over parts of Scotland. Following the rain, expect a mix of sunshine and showers, with heavier showers likely in the north.
