John McEnroe was forced to leave his BBC commentary duties during Arthur Fery’s match against Grigor Dimitrov. Fery, the sole British player to reach the second week of the men’s singles, initially claimed the opening set 7-5 but his more experienced opponent rallied back to secure the following sets.
Following a prolonged toilet break by Fery after the second set, McEnroe took the opportunity to step away from the commentary box where he was with Andrew Cotter and Tim Henman. Cotter then informed viewers of McEnroe’s departure, stating that he might not return for the remainder of the match.
McEnroe, in response, mentioned his contractual obligations to cover Taylor Fritz, the only American remaining in the draw. Fritz was slated to face Alexander Bublik, with other contenders like Bublik and Zverev also posing challenges.
Meanwhile, Linda Noskova, the ninth seed, defeated Madison Keys on Court 1, setting the stage for Fritz’s upcoming match against Bublik. Fritz acknowledged the tough challenge ahead against the world No. 11.
Expressing his readiness for the match, Fritz noted that both Bublik and Tiafoe were formidable opponents, each showcasing strong performances on the grass courts. Fritz had faced both players during the grass court season and anticipated a challenging round of 16 clash.
Despite a tough battle, Bublik, who overcame Tiafoe in five sets, ultimately lost the first set tie-break to Fritz in their fourth-round encounter on Court 1.
