Burnham envisions this approach as granting mayors more autonomy to enhance their regions, emphasizing growth and investment over tax cuts. However, Conservative mayor Ben Houchen has hinted at using income tax revenues to provide rebates to local residents.
The Prime Minister has disapproved of the idea of mayors acting as “mini Chancellors,” emphasizing the policy’s focus on fostering growth and investment rather than altering tax policies. Burnham stressed the importance of sustained economic growth to support ongoing investment, highlighting the success of similar strategies in Greater Manchester. He warned against short-term gains that could jeopardize long-term prosperity.
Addressing various issues at a community center in Sheffield, Burnham indicated his intention to reject proposals to limit jury trials, emphasizing the significance of juries in the justice system. Plans to curtail jury trials had faced opposition from legal bodies and some Labour MPs. Burnham also mentioned his openness to discussions on devolving powers related to asylum hotel contracts and HMOs, aiming to explore more effective local solutions.
