Raging wildfires in the southwest regions of France and eastern parts of Spain have led to the evacuation of over 330,000 individuals as the flames approach the city of Bordeaux and its airport.
Approximately 220,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes in France’s Gironde department, where Bordeaux is situated. The hotel zone at the city’s airport has also been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Challenges persist due to shifting winds and dry conditions, hampering efforts to contain the massive blaze that has been burning uncontrollably since the previous week. The fire has generated a rare “pyrocumulonimbus,” a large fire-induced thunderstorm fueled by its own winds and lightning, as reported by the National Firefighters Federation of France.
Meanwhile, in Spain, wildfires have been spreading around Madrid, prompting evacuations in the Valencia region. Around 15,000 people have been evacuated from the eastern coastal city, with over 90,000 fleeing from areas near Madrid and Ávila. Tragically, a man lost his life in a wildfire in Manises, a suburb of Valencia, marking Spain’s first recorded death in the recent fires.
The primary wildfire in southwest France currently sits approximately nine miles south of Bordeaux, which ranks as the country’s sixth most populous metropolitan area.
Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave has indicated that there are no immediate plans to evacuate the city’s population of around 850,000 residents.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for standing in solidarity with the wildfire victims in France and Spain. The Pope, during his Sunday Angelus prayer, mentioned the devastating wildfires in both countries, urging prayers for the affected individuals and the brave rescuers tackling the blazes.
In response to a post shared by the Pope, Macron conveyed his appreciation on behalf of the French people for the support offered.
