A man has pleaded guilty to murdering his mother after pretending to be asleep during police interviews. Richard Clayton, 45, confessed to killing Angela Clayton, 74, at their residence in Newham, east London. The tragic event occurred on February 17 when Clayton strangled his mother before contacting emergency services.
Upon arrival at 12.48pm, authorities, accompanied by the London Ambulance Service, discovered the victim in her bedroom, where she was pronounced deceased. Clayton, who feigned sleep during questioning, was subsequently arrested and charged with murder the following day.
In a court appearance at the Old Bailey in central London, Clayton acknowledged the murder charge. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke of Scotland Yard expressed condolences to Angela’s loved ones, highlighting the loss of a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend. Yorke emphasized the commitment to combatting violence against women and girls.
The victim’s family, in a statement, shared their relentless pursuit of justice for Angela. Clayton is set to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, September 22.
