A man has been convicted of murdering a beloved father after brutally assaulting him and concealing his body in an abandoned building. The incident took place at the Brockley Social Club in Lewisham, where both the victim, Junior Coleman, 43, and the perpetrator, Daniel Watkis, were residing. Forensic examination revealed that Coleman died from severe head and facial injuries caused by repeated blunt force trauma.
Surveillance footage captured Watkis and Coleman entering the social club together, with Watkis later returning alone late in the evening, coinciding with the time of Coleman’s fatal injuries. Suspicious behavior by Watkis, including frequent glances back at the building and a change in his communication patterns, raised concerns among investigators. Subsequent searches of the premises led to the discovery of Coleman’s body hidden under a tarpaulin, along with personal items belonging to Watkis that linked him to the crime scene.
Watkis, initially denying any involvement in the murder, was eventually arrested and charged with the offense. Despite attempts to distance himself from the victim, evidence contradicted his claims, confirming their association and presence at the social club. Following a trial, Watkis was found guilty of murder and is awaiting sentencing scheduled for October 9.
Detective Chief Inspector Suzanne Soren, who oversaw the investigation, expressed sympathy for Coleman’s family and praised the dedication of the investigative team in unraveling the complex case. The verdict serves as a form of justice for the victim’s loved ones and sends a clear message that serious crimes will not go unpunished, emphasizing the commitment to thorough investigations and accountability for perpetrators.
