Lord Blunkett Urges New Deal for UK’s Crisis Youth

Britain is being urged to initiate a New Deal-style initiative to address the crisis of young people not in employment, education, or training (Neets) by former Cabinet minister Lord David Blunkett. This call comes after a recent report by Alan Milburn revealed that over one million young individuals are affected, warning of a potential £125 billion economic impact if urgent government intervention is not implemented.

In an article for The Mirror, Lord Blunkett emphasized the importance of prioritizing young people in government infrastructure projects as a solution to the crisis. These projects would involve the construction of new schools, transportation networks, hospitals, and offshore wind plants nationwide, with an estimated demand for a workforce of up to 706,000 over the next five years.

Drawing parallels to historical initiatives, Lord Blunkett referenced President Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s and the Labour government’s efforts in 1997 to support youth learning and employment. He stressed the necessity of investing in skills to secure the future of the country’s youth in the current scenario.

Meanwhile, discussions have emerged regarding potential measures to boost youth employment, including a proposal to reverse the increase in employers’ national insurance contributions. However, differing opinions have been voiced, with some pointing out existing incentives for hiring young workers and emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to address the long-standing issues of youth inactivity.

Additionally, a recent study highlighted a concerning trend of diminishing opportunities for young people to engage in social activities and creative endeavors, leading to feelings of isolation and disconnection. The findings underscore the importance of providing spaces for young individuals to connect, create, and develop skills to shape a more promising future.

Comedian Jack Rooke, a supporter of creative spaces for young people, emphasized the significance of ensuring equal access to opportunities for all individuals, regardless of background or economic status. He stressed the need to rebuild pathways that empower young people to express themselves, acquire skills, and envision a successful future in various industries.
