A Saudi physician has been handed a life sentence for crashing a rented BMW into a Christmas market in Germany, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.
Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, aged 51, faced trial at the state court in November following the incident on December 20, 2024, in Magdeburg, Germany. The attack claimed the lives of five women and a young boy, leaving several others injured.
The event lasted slightly over a minute and was executed using a rented BMW X3, which reached speeds of about 30mph during the assault. The court determined that the 51-year-old bore “particularly serious” responsibility, as reported by the German news agency dpa.
His life sentence implies that he will not be eligible for parole after the customary 15 years in Germany. Investigators confirmed that al-Abdulmohsen was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Authorities disclosed that his actions appeared to stem from dissatisfaction with a legal conflict’s outcome and the failure of several criminal complaints. The perpetrator orchestrated the attack independently without any collaborators.
It was noted that the suspect did not fit the typical profile of extremist attack perpetrators. He identified himself as a former Muslim highly critical of Islam, openly supporting far-right ideologies on social media.
While al-Abdulmohsen had no prior record of violence, he had previously drawn attention for threatening conduct. The Magdeburg tragedy was part of a series of incidents involving immigrants that brought migration to the forefront of Germany’s national election campaign in February 2025.
The defendant migrated to Germany in 2006 and had been granted permanent residency.
