Calgary Flames radio icon, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher, renowned for his passionate play-by-play commentary, served as the voice of the Flames for an impressive 33 seasons. His memorable catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” became synonymous with Flames fandom in Calgary.

Maher’s illustrious career spanned significant milestones for the team, including their Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their journey to the finals in 2004. Following his retirement after the 2013-14 NHL season, the Flames paid tribute to Maher, acknowledging his enduring impact on the fan experience.

Hailing from Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games before transitioning to the Flames in 1980. His move to Calgary marked a pivotal moment in his career, solidifying his status as the official voice of the team.

Rob Kerr, Maher’s longtime colleague in the Saddledome press box, expressed deep sorrow at the news of Maher’s passing. Kerr lauded Maher’s dedication to delivering quality broadcasts, emphasizing his role as a cherished storyteller of Flames history.

In recognition of Maher’s enduring impact, the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome was named in his honor post-retirement.
