The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record in the CFL by experiencing the longest losing streak in the modern era. Their 15th consecutive defeat occurred on Friday night against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, extending back to the previous season. This surpasses the Shreveport Pirates’ 14-game losing streak in 1994, as confirmed by CFL historian Steve Daniel.
Expressing disappointment, Jimmy Fata, a devoted Redblacks supporter present at the record-breaking loss, highlighted the lack of clarity on the team’s ongoing struggles. The tradition of cutting a “wood cookie” for every touchdown at home games has been infrequent lately, reflecting the team’s challenges.
In addition to holding the modern-day CFL record, the Redblacks now hold the third-longest losing streak in the entire CFL history, dating back to 1907. Another loss against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second spot. The league’s evolution post-World War II marked a shift towards professionalism, contrasting the earlier strictly amateur era.
Looking ahead, Daniel suggested a continued roster rebuild, especially on the defensive front, to address the team’s deficiencies. Despite the Redblacks’ struggles, Fata emphasized the importance of unwavering support for the team through thick and thin, likening it to supporting a child through challenges.
