The perpetrator of the tragic incident involving James Bulger is seeking legal action to prevent the victim’s parents from attending his upcoming parole hearing. Jon Venables, the convicted murderer, aged 43, was granted a new hearing approximately 11 months ago. Despite James Bulger’s parents, Ralph, 59, and Denise, 57, being granted permission to attend the review, Venables has contested this decision.
Preparations for the hearing, initially set for last August, have been ongoing for the parents. However, Venables’ challenge has delayed the proceedings, pushing the expected date to September at the earliest. This setback, which includes the Bulger family’s impact statements, has added further distress to James’ family.
Sources revealed that the family is enduring ongoing anguish, questioning their role as victims in contrast to the individual who perpetrated the heinous acts against James. The family had hope when granted access to the parole hearing but are now faced with uncertainty due to Venables’ reluctance to face them.
Venables, infamous for the abduction, torture, and murder of two-year-old James Bulger in 1993, has expressed his refusal to attend the hearing if James’ parents are present. Despite being under a lifetime anonymity order, Venables would testify from behind a screen during the review.
In a previous parole hearing in November 2023, Venables failed to appear in person, citing concerns about his mental health and the closed-door nature of the proceedings when facing the victim’s family. Subsequently, on December 13 of the same year, the Parole Board decided against his release, deeming him a significant risk to children.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Parole Board by the Mirror have been made in relation to this matter.
