“Inadequate Sleep Linked to Weight Gain: Study”

A recent study reveals the detrimental impact of inadequate sleep on weight gain. Researchers from Columbia University found that reducing nightly sleep by 80 minutes resulted in an average weight gain of one pound every six weeks, along with increased sedentary behavior.

Lead researcher Marie-Pierre St-Onge emphasized the importance of sufficient sleep in reducing the risk of obesity-related conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Previous studies demonstrated that severe sleep deprivation affects appetite and can lead to overeating, contributing to weight gain. However, this study focused on a more common scenario where individuals gradually lose sleep over an extended period.

The study involved 95 adults who typically slept seven to eight hours per night. Participants were instructed to delay bedtime by 90 minutes for six weeks and then return to their regular sleep schedule for another six weeks. Data on sleep patterns, body weight, waist circumference, body composition, and hormone levels affecting appetite were collected.

The findings showed that even a modest reduction in sleep duration could lead to significant weight gain over time, with sedentary time also increasing during the study period. Additionally, women with increased cardiometabolic risk who shortened their sleep duration had higher insulin resistance, particularly postmenopausal women.

Further research is needed to understand how sleep restriction influences weight gain and related health conditions. The study underscores the importance of adequate sleep in preventing obesity-related diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The results were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
