Amid a supposed US-Iran ceasefire, violence in Lebanon persists as Hezbollah’s leader demands the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the country. Israeli strikes on Hezbollah operatives resulted in seven fatalities, with four Israeli soldiers injured in retaliatory attacks. This conflict defies the 60-day peaceful negotiation outlined in US President Donald Trump’s memorandum of understanding.
The recent escalation occurred when the Israeli Defence Force entered the Ali Taher ridge to confront a group of Hezbollah fighters entrenched in a vast tunnel network. Hezbollah’s Naim Qassem proclaimed Iran’s victory over the US and Israel, insisting on the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.
The situation further deteriorated as Israel insisted on maintaining a military presence in Lebanon to safeguard against Hezbollah threats. The United Nations temporarily halted the evacuation of sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz following an Iranian attack on a cargo ship.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps clashed with vessels attempting to navigate the strait, warning against unauthorized routes. Despite these tensions, some ships have successfully passed through the vital waterway, albeit at reduced numbers compared to pre-conflict levels.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical maritime passage, with recent events underscoring the ongoing geopolitical complexities in the region.
