A grandmother, Gill Thompson, reunites with her long-lost brother Michael Bardsley after 73 years of separation. The heartwarming reunion occurred after Gill located Michael on LinkedIn, reminiscent of a scene from a popular TV show.
Gill, aged 73, had no knowledge of her father, Colin Bardsley, until receiving a Christmas card from her paternal grandfather at 25. Learning that her father had moved to Cape Town, South Africa, Gill tried unsuccessfully to find him in the late 90s. However, a chance encounter with someone sharing her brother’s name at a bowls tournament reignited her search last August.
With the help of her daughter Sammy, 31, they eventually located Michael on LinkedIn, identifying him as her half-brother through familial features. The siblings met for the first time at Colwyn Bay railway station in north Wales on June 8, sharing an emotional embrace and reminiscing about their past.
Michael, a sports film producer from Cape Town, expressed his joy at finally meeting his sister, reflecting on the memories of their father. Gill, a retired PE teacher, revealed that she had never known much about her father until discovering a wedding photo of her parents after her mother’s passing in 1986.
Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to find her father, Gill resumed her search 27 years ago when she acquired her first computer. However, personal challenges delayed her efforts until recently. The breakthrough came when Sammy identified a potential match at a bowls festival, leading to the heartwarming reunion between Gill and Michael.
The newfound siblings have since connected with other relatives, including Michael’s aunt and cousins. They now maintain regular communication through texts and video calls, cherishing their newfound bond. Gill expressed gratitude for the internet, which made their reunion possible and brought their family together after decades apart.
