A man, aged 27, shared his experience of undergoing treatment for an extremely rare condition that left him with radioactive exposure. Diagnosed with a cancer type affecting fewer than one in 100,000 individuals, Ben Wagenmann, a German student residing in Switzerland, underwent nuclear treatment that required him to be confined in an underground facility for several days. His health ordeal began when he noticed a lump on his throat after skiing and contracting a chest infection in April 2023.
Even though his symptoms initially improved, the persistent lump led to further investigations. By November, a 3D ultrasound and subsequent MRI revealed a sizable tumor behind a lymph node, measuring up to 6cm. Ben was diagnosed with cervical paraganglioma, a slow-growing tumor in the neck’s carotid artery. This type of tumor, as documented in a US medical journal, can cause various symptoms like a painless neck mass, swallowing difficulties, voice alterations, and nerve weakness.
Despite undergoing radionuclide therapy to target and eliminate cancer cells internally, the treatment was successful in halting progression but did not reduce the existing tumors. Ben’s current treatment focus is on extending his life expectancy rather than aiming for a cure, acknowledging the likelihood of a shortened life span.
Expressing his perspective, Ben highlighted the emotional impact on his parents and his acceptance of the uncertain outcome. His active lifestyle, which encompassed cycling and skiing alongside his studies, was abruptly altered by the discovery of his condition. Constant medical check-ups and treatments have become a routine part of Ben’s life as he navigates the challenges posed by his rare and incurable cancer.
Ben’s journey, characterized by resilience and determination, serves as a testament to his refusal to let cancer dictate his daily existence.
