A German palliative care physician has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing 15 individuals by administering a deadly mix of sedatives and causing fires to conceal his actions. The 41-year-old doctor, known as Johannes M in compliance with privacy regulations, was found guilty by a Berlin court for the murders of 12 women and three men during home visits spanning from September 2021 to July 2024. The victims ranged in age from 25 to 94. It was revealed in court that he set fire to the victims’ residences in an attempt to hide the murders on multiple occasions.
Judge Sylvia Busch remarked that the 15 confirmed murders might only scratch the surface, as authorities are currently looking into the deaths of 76 other individuals. Describing Johannes M as a “serial killer” at the core of an incomprehensible and remarkable case, the court decided that due to the extreme severity of the crimes, there would be no reconsideration after 15 years for the suspension of the remainder of the sentence. Additionally, preventive detention was ordered after serving the prison term, and he was prohibited from practicing medicine in the future.
Prosecutors stated that the doctor had a “desire for murder” with no other motive than the act itself. The mother of the youngest victim, a 25-year-old woman who was killed in 2021, emotionally testified in court that her daughter never expressed a desire to end her life. The court determined that Johannes M deliberately administered substances leading to respiratory failure and death in minutes.
On July 8, 2024, he murdered a 75-year-old man in Kreuzberg and later that day a 76-year-old woman in Neukolln. His attempt to set fire to the second crime scene was unsuccessful. In a confession on Monday, Johannes M acknowledged his actions, expressing remorse and a newfound understanding of the suffering he caused.
Concerns about Johannes M’s actions were first raised by care services, prompting a police inquiry that resulted in his arrest in August 2024. Initially focusing on four cases, the investigation expanded as more suspicious deaths came to light. Reports suggest that if the additional deaths are confirmed as murders and Johannes M is convicted, he could be recognized as one of Germany’s most prolific serial killers.
