Heba Abaid, 26, is among numerous aspiring students in Palestine who aspire to study in the UK to escape the horrors of genocide. The UK government recently affirmed its commitment to assisting outstanding young individuals in Gaza who have secured unconditional admission to a British university with a full scholarship or the means to cover tuition fees.
Despite her aspirations, Heba, like many other Palestinian youths, faces financial challenges. She currently resides in a tent with her family on the former site of her demolished home. Heba’s plight, reflective of many others in the region, prompted several British celebrities to initiate a fundraising campaign. The objective was to raise funds through an online auction to support exceptional students in pursuing their academic dreams in the UK.
Notable personalities such as Gary Lineker, Brian Cox, Nicola Coughlan, Charlotte Church, and Paloma Faith contributed items for the Scholarships for Gaza online auction. Heba stands to benefit from the proceeds of the initiative, organized by charity Phoenix Space and running until Thursday, August 6. She expressed her appreciation for the celebrities’ generosity and the public’s contributions towards the cause.

To fulfill her ambition of pursuing a Master’s degree in Design Management at Lancaster University in the UK, Heba needs to raise £32,129. A GoFundMe campaign has garnered over £3,000 towards this goal. Heba’s journey has been marked by harrowing experiences, including the loss of her home in Khan Yunis, the death of her brother in an Israeli bombing, and the tragic passing of her father amidst the turmoil in Gaza.
