An extensive renovation project at a bustling European airport will lead to its closure for nearly a week. Almeria Airport in Spain is set to shut down for six days to enhance its runway in February 2028, resulting in the cancellation of all flights during that period.
This renovation marks the first time in two decades that work will be done on the airport’s runway. Located just a short 15-minute drive from Almeria city center in Spain’s Andalusia region, the airport serves approximately 800,000 passengers annually, with British travelers accounting for a significant portion, estimated between 55 to 70 percent.
The runway upgrade is part of a comprehensive 19-month initiative to modernize the entire airport, with a total cost of €29 million (£24.8 million). Work will primarily take place at night between 10:45 pm and 7:10 am the following day, impacting flights scheduled during these hours.
Aena, the operator of Spain’s airports, has informed airlines operating at Almeria Airport, such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Iberia, about the upcoming closure. These airlines will need to reschedule flights or redirect them to alternate airports.
Popular flight routes from Almeria Airport to the UK include destinations like Birmingham, London Southend, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, and Leeds Bradford. Other aspects of the renovation project involve enhancing taxiways, upgrading more than 600 lights, and replacing 34 directional signs.
