Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been given a four-year suspension from professional tennis for declining a doping test in December. In a recent Instagram post, the ex-world No.6 expressed her dismay when a doping control officer arrived unannounced at her residence for an out-of-competition test. Vondrousova, who claimed the Wimbledon title in 2023, deemed the incident a violation of her privacy.
In a subsequent statement in April, the Olympic silver medalist disclosed feeling overwhelmed and fearful due to an unanticipated visit from an unidentified individual late at night, failing to follow standard protocols. Vondrousova clarified that her actions were not intended to avoid the test but rather stemmed from genuine concerns for her safety.
Additionally, medical professionals confirmed that Vondrousova experienced Acute Stress Reaction and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Following investigations, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) charged Vondrousova with test refusal, leading to the announcement of a four-year ban due to the absence of a compelling reason for her refusal.
In an official statement issued by the ITIA, it was declared that an independent tribunal had sanctioned Czech player Marketa Vondrousova for four years for declining an anti-doping test in December 2025. The incident occurred during an out-of-competition test at her residence at 8 pm on December 3, 2025, where she did not provide a sample upon notification by a Doping Control Officer (DCO).
Karen Moorhouse, the CEO of ITIA, emphasized the necessity of maintaining fair competition through rigorous testing procedures despite the challenges and pressures faced by players. The ITIA highlighted the importance of safeguarding the well-being of both players and testers, underscoring the significance of unpredictable testing to uphold the integrity of the sport.
During the hearing, Vondrousova cited stress, mental health issues, and safety concerns as factors influencing her decision, while the doping control officer involved in the incident also presented their perspective. Despite these considerations, the tribunal concluded that there was insufficient justification for Vondrousova’s refusal of the test.
