Florida Officer Faces Charges in Fatal 104mph Crash

A tragic incident occurred when a six-year-old girl lost her life in a high-speed collision involving a Florida police officer allegedly driving at 104mph in a 50mph zone. The officer, Zachary Krug, then 25 years old and serving with the Temple Terrace Police Department, was reportedly running late for duty on April 15.

The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. as Krug activated the lights of his unmarked vehicle at a red light to accelerate through the intersection. Despite spotting a woman, Samantha Sakowski, making a turn with her three children in the car, he could not avoid colliding with their vehicle at about 74mph, resulting in severe injuries to Sakowski and her children. Tragically, her six-year-old daughter, Leila, did not survive the collision.

Subsequent investigations revealed conflicting claims, with prosecutors presenting dash camera footage suggesting Krug sped up before the crash, while the defense argued he was pursuing another speeding driver while on duty. However, the State Attorney rejected the defense’s argument, stating no evidence supported Krug being in pursuit of another vehicle.

Expressing dismay over the incident, State Attorney Suzy Lopez emphasized that the officer’s actions endangered lives and directly led to the tragic death of the six-year-old girl. Krug was subsequently terminated from his position at the Temple Terrace Police Department and taken into custody, with a court appearance scheduled for August 13 after posting a $90,000 bond.

The victims’ family initiated a GoFundMe page to support their medical expenses, with donations exceeding $19,000. An update on May 30 reported progress in the recovery of the eight-year-old child, while the six-year-old continues her rehabilitation with ongoing therapy and medication.
