Three workers at a bungee jumping facility have been arrested after claiming they have no memory of the events that led to a young woman’s fatal fall.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, tragically fell 130 feet to her death on Saturday after allegedly being pushed from Skeleton Bridge in São Paulo, Brazil, without being properly secured to a safety rope. Distressing video footage shared online captured bystanders desperately trying to intervene, shouting warnings that she was not properly prepared for the jump.
Following the incident, two of the individuals reportedly fled the scene before six people were detained by Brazil’s military police for questioning. Subsequently, three of them were charged with intentional homicide, according to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat.
The trio, identified as Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, and Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, 27, are currently in custody as legal proceedings progress.
Their legal representative, Rafael Gomes dos Santos, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, stating, “They are in a state of shock. They cannot explain what happened because they have been doing this for years. Nothing like this has ever happened.”
During police interrogation, the men claimed they could not recall how the safety equipment malfunctioned, citing a “blackout” during the setup process. Feliciano Egoroff, who reportedly earned around $35 per jump, along with Fernandes Cintra, mentioned they could not remember who conducted the final safety checks, explaining that equipment inspections are typically done jointly.
The victim was laid to rest in the capital city on Sunday, with her mother sharing her grief on social media, lamenting the loss of her beloved daughter.
Prior to the tragic incident, the victim had shared multiple Instagram stories documenting her thrill-seeking experiences. One poignant message posted around 7.30am local time displayed a photo of the bridge with the caption, “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?”.
Authorities from Limeira Town Hall have indicated plans to take legal action against the Brazilian government for its alleged failure to adequately oversee activities at the bridge.
This is not the first tragedy at the location. In April 2024, a 39-year-old female cyclist died after falling from the bridge, and in August 2025, two other women sustained severe injuries in a separate incident at the same spot. “In addition to investigating the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death, it is crucial to determine who is accountable for the lack of access control to a federal area that has been known to pose risks for years without proper safety measures,” said Limeira’s mayor Murilo Felix.
Felix added, “We have been urging action for months to ensure that the Federal Government fulfills its responsibilities. Unfortunately, their inaction has resulted in yet another tragedy in Limeira.”
