Gary Southgate’s dream has come to life with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley. The farmer from North Battleford has been working tirelessly to share the stories of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets” through a collection of vintage trains.
Southgate’s passion for trains dates back to his childhood, where he was captivated by the sight of a steam locomotive passing by. His collection now includes a variety of rail cars, some of which have historical significance, such as those featured in the Polar Express films and the rail car once used by Eleanor Roosevelt.
Despite facing challenges, including setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate remains determined to see his vision through. With the help of Great Western Railway staff, Eastend Scenic Rail Tours has successfully operated several trips this year, drawing visitors from across the country and even internationally.
Looking ahead, Southgate envisions expanding his operation to include an RV park, a museum, and a maintenance facility for the trains. While acknowledging the financial struggles associated with the venture, he remains optimistic about the future and hopes that others will continue his legacy of preserving history through the railways.
