Millions of individuals utilize weight loss and diabetes injections annually, but health experts are cautioning patients to be mindful of a potentially severe symptom that could impact their vision.
The caution concerns medications containing semaglutide such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. As per the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), individuals encountering sudden vision issues should promptly seek medical assistance.
This alert pertains to an uncommon eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), impacting the optic nerve and potentially resulting in sudden and sometimes irreversible vision loss.
According to the MHRA, individuals taking semaglutide should urgently seek medical aid if they encounter “sudden loss or rapid deterioration of eyesight.” The regulatory body advised discontinuing treatment if NAION is confirmed.
NAION occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve diminishes, causing harm to the nerve tissue responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain. The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital describes NAION as a “small stroke” of the optic nerve, though it does not manifest typical stroke symptoms.
The hospital states that NAION ranks among the most common causes of abrupt optic nerve-related vision loss in individuals over 50. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking are cited as potential risk factors, according to the hospital’s patient guidance.
Symptoms of NAION usually emerge suddenly and painlessly. Patients commonly notice blurred, cloudy, or missing areas in their vision, typically affecting one eye.
A review of evidence on the safety of semaglutide medications prompted the MHRA’s caution. While adults with type 2 diabetes taking semaglutide reportedly face about twice the risk of developing NAION compared to non-users, health officials stress that the condition remains exceedingly rare.
Semaglutide, found in Wegovy for weight loss, and Ozempic and Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes, has seen a surge in prescriptions due to escalating demand for weight management solutions.
The MHRA underlines that patients should not discontinue prescribed medication without consulting a healthcare provider, emphasizing that the benefits of semaglutide outweigh known risks when used appropriately.
