An American man was fatally shot in a secluded Puerto Rico coastal area following his communication regarding a mysterious individual dubbed “the howler.”
The victim, Tyler Wilkin, aged 35, was discovered with a single gunshot wound to the back of his head near the isolated Playa la Selva in the northeast of the Caribbean island. Local sources reported that his body was found just after 6am on July 10.
Authorities suspect that Wilkin was shot at close range in what appears to be an execution-style murder. Originally from Ohio, Wilkin had been residing in Puerto Rico since January 2024.
Wilkin’s girlfriend dropped him off at the remote beach on July 8, where he intended to camp for a couple of days. During his stay, he sent distressing messages regarding an individual he called “the howler,” who was allegedly causing disruptions near his campsite by setting off fireworks and emitting wolf-like howls.
On the night of his death, Wilkin messaged a friend saying, “The howler is back!” His final communication was received around 2am, where he mentioned the disruptive behavior of the unidentified man.
Concern arose when Wilkin failed to send his customary early-morning message of “Good morning, love” around 6am. His body was later found in the mangroves by a beachgoer on a morning walk.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Speculations vary, with the victim’s girlfriend suggesting a possible robbery motive, while others criticize the slow progress of the local police investigation.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by loved ones to raise funds for a private investigator to delve into the case further. The initiative aims to seek justice and closure for Wilkin’s untimely death.
Described as a vibrant individual by his family, Wilkin’s zest for life and his ability to bring joy to those around him are fondly remembered. His sudden and tragic loss has left a void in the hearts of his parents, siblings, and friends.
