Europe is gearing up for its first mainland total solar eclipse in over two decades, set to occur on Wednesday, August 12. This celestial event will see the Moon passing directly between the Sun and Earth, creating a stunning shadow across parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
The total solar eclipse, where the Moon completely obscures the Sun’s visible disc, will be visible from various regions including northern Spain, the north-east corner of Portugal, eastern Greenland, western Iceland, northern Russia, and the Atlantic Ocean. On the other hand, countries like the UK, parts of Canada, the northern United States, and north-west Africa will experience a partial solar eclipse, with significant coverage of the Sun by the Moon in places like London.
Individuals fortunate enough to be in the narrow “path of totality” will witness the mesmerizing sight of the Moon completely blocking the Sun, leading to a temporary darkness and revealing the Sun’s corona. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), this extraordinary moment will last for up to one minute and 40 seconds.
Although total solar eclipses happen approximately every 18 months, the upcoming event holds particular significance as it marks the first eclipse visible from mainland Spain in over a century and the deepest eclipse visible from the UK since 1999. An infographic released by the ESA outlines the path of totality across Spain and Portugal, with major cities in northern Spain and parts of the Balearic Islands falling within this path.
While the UK and Ireland will not witness the total eclipse, regions like Cornwall and Pembrokeshire in the UK, and the south-west coast of Ireland, are expected to have substantial eclipse coverage. The Royal Observatory Greenwich states that areas in the south-west of the UK will experience the widest eclipse coverage, with timings provided for locations like Truro. Experts recommend the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry as one of the prime spots in Ireland for optimal eclipse viewing.
