An elderly man was admitted to the hospital after being severely assaulted by another resident in a care home. John Cain, 87, was attacked in a secure garden area at HammondCare’s facility in Hammondville, Sydney, around 9pm on Wednesday, June 17.
Disturbing images from the hospital show Mr. Cain with severe facial injuries and covered in blood and bruises. He was found outside his cottage within the dementia unit, injured and bleeding, prompting his daughter Margaret, who lives in Spain, to express shock and disbelief.
Margaret received a phone call informing her of her father’s injuries and rushed to the facility. She was concerned about the lack of immediate information about the incident and insisted on accompanying her father to the hospital.
As John continues to recover in the hospital, his family demands answers regarding the circumstances of the assault. HammondCare has initiated an investigation to determine how the incident occurred without detection.
Executive General Manager Jenny Summerton expressed regret and sadness over the incident, stating that the facility promptly notified the police and the family. She highlighted the challenges of caring for residents with severe dementia, emphasizing the need for vigilance and caution.
A spokesperson for HammondCare confirmed that an internal investigation is ongoing, and appropriate measures have been taken to prevent further incidents. The other resident involved is receiving care and evaluation. Families of other residents have been informed of the situation.
A 69-year-old man, Geoffrey Innes, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and is under police guard at Liverpool Hospital. Despite being denied bail, he is set to appear in court for a bedside hearing.
