“Education Minister Calandra Optimistic Amid Contract Talks”

Education Minister Paul Calandra remains positive about the ongoing contract talks with teachers and education workers, despite frustration from unions over the government’s stance and a pause in discussions. Calandra, along with education union leaders, expressed optimism in June before negotiations on contracts expiring in August. During a recent news conference, Calandra reiterated his commitment to reaching a negotiated settlement for teachers, parents, and students.

However, David Mastin, president of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, highlighted a standstill in discussions due to differences over central table negotiations. Mastin noted that the province is pushing for more topics to be addressed centrally, reducing the role of local unions and school boards in bargaining.

The issue has been escalated to the Ontario Labour Relations Board, halting progress in bargaining. Despite challenges, Mastin emphasized unity among unions this year in response to government pressures on the education system.

Calandra assured that schools would open as usual in September, emphasizing the importance of avoiding disruptions later in the academic year. He stressed the common goal of prioritizing student needs and achieving a fair settlement with unions.

Martha Hradowy, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, criticized the government for attempting to shift certain issues away from local negotiations. She urged for continued discussions on key issues like class sizes and workloads.

The introduction of oversight positions by Calandra raised concerns among unions, questioning the impact on democratic accountability and community involvement in decision-making processes related to education. The unions highlighted the need for meaningful public consultation on such significant changes.
