Defence Secretary John Healey Resigns Amid Funding Dispute

In a surprising move, Defence Secretary John Healey has resigned from the Government, dealing a significant blow to Keir Starmer. He criticized the Prime Minister for delayed military investment plans, warning that the proposals could weaken the armed forces and compromise Britain’s safety. The ongoing debate among ministers centers on funding the Defense Investment Plan (DIP), which is already months behind schedule.

In his resignation letter to the PM, Healey highlighted the urgent need for a robust DIP to address looming threats, citing intelligence assessments of potential Russian aggression on NATO by 2030. He emphasized the necessity of adequate resources for the Forces to maintain readiness and ensure national security. Expressing disappointment in the Treasury’s reluctance to allocate necessary funds, Healey pointed out the escalating defense demands and UK commitments to allies.

Moments before the announcement of Healey’s resignation, a No10 spokesperson confirmed that the defense plan was still being finalized, with a commitment from Starmer to release it before the upcoming NATO summit in July. Healey’s letter to Starmer acknowledged their government’s achievements in strengthening defense capabilities, enhancing alliances, and securing significant defense contracts. However, he stressed the critical importance of sufficient funding to meet evolving security challenges and fulfill NATO obligations.

Healey urged for a DIP that addresses current operational needs, accelerates defense preparedness, and aligns with the agreed NATO spending targets. Despite recognizing the financial strain on other government departments, he insisted on a more substantial investment in defense to safeguard national interests. Dissatisfied with the proposed financial settlement, Healey regretfully tendered his resignation as Defence Secretary, emphasizing the imperative of adequately resourcing the Forces for the country’s defense and stability.

Healey concluded his letter expressing unwavering support for the Labour Government under Starmer’s leadership, acknowledging the continued challenges faced by the Prime Minister.
